Your First Pickleball Class
Brand-new YMCA members should start with the Sylvania YMCA/JCC's Experience Pickleball Phase 1 program. It is designed for people who have never played or have not had formal instruction. The class covers safety, court setup, serving, returns, the two-bounce rule, scoring, forehands, backhands, volleys, and basic court position.
Fall 2026 Phase 1 sessions are offered in monthly blocks, including Monday morning and Tuesday evening options. The program is for YMCA members and costs $30. See current beginner sessions and register.
After learning the basics, Veterans Memorial Park gives new players a direct route into Sylvania's outdoor playing community. The Sylvania Pickleball Club also keeps a limited number of paddles for first-time players. Individual instruction is available through the Coaches section.
Open Play and Club Sessions
Veterans Memorial Park has public outdoor play every day from 8:00 a.m. to sunset. Sylvania Pickleball Club members also have recurring organized court times on four of the six courts: Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., plus Tuesday and Thursday from 4:00 p.m. to sunset. See the current Sylvania Pickleball Club schedule.
Club membership is $20 per calendar year and includes member-only events, exclusive outdoor play periods, and discounted indoor drop-in fees. Public players can still use courts 1 and 5 during the club's reserved outdoor periods.
From mid-October through March, organized play shifts indoors to Tam-O-Shanter. Public drop-in sessions are available to nonmembers for $5, with club members paying $3. There is no indoor pickleball in December, and the Recreation District posts the active drop-in schedule as facility programming changes.
Playing Pickleball While You Are in Sylvania
If you are visiting with a partner or group during outdoor season, Veterans Memorial Park is the simplest choice. Public play runs daily from 8:00 a.m. to sunset, and two courts remain public even during Sylvania Pickleball Club's reserved time blocks.
A visitor coming alone can also start at Veterans Memorial Park during the busier club periods, when there are more players around the complex. Club-reserved courts require membership during those blocks, so nonmembers should use the public courts unless invited through the applicable club rules.
During the indoor season, Tam-O-Shanter is especially visitor-friendly because nonmembers can participate in public drop-in pickleball for $5 per session. This gives travelers a practical weather-proof option without buying an annual club membership. Visitors staying longer who want regular outdoor club sessions can join Sylvania Pickleball Club for the calendar year.
